1. Can we spot reduce fat?
As personal trainers we could really cut this answer short during our personal training sessions with our clients at the EXOFIT studio, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 but we don't... Because there is no such thing as a silly question by a client and question simple enough for us to consider an "one liner" answer. This believe it or not is a very common occurrence and topic at the EXOFIT studio, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Probably not a straight up question asked to us when personal training our clients but comments added towards the end of our personal training sessions with "can we do some abs for the finish, it's my problem area, Anthony". My first initial question back to clients is "can we spot increase fat by consuming certain foods?". They often say "I don't know" lol. But the answer is, we can't. No specific noodle will increase fat on the triceps (arms) and no amount of sweet potato will increase fat on the thighs (legs), so why would any amount of a certain exercise target a specific area of fat on our body? This isn't the complete truth though, your body does have the ability to spot reduce fat when targeting certain muscle groups (tricep extensions burning fat on the back of the arms) but it is very, very, VERY small and not worth the time at the end of a session when we can consider other exercises. There is no real king of all exercises to promote a quicker fat loss transition if the overall calorie intake is not on queue or on par. The intensity of the exercise or personal training session will help the fact of burning overall calories during the personal training session and after the personal training session (E.P.O.C). Exercise post oxygen consumption (essentially the body demanding extra oxygen to help oxidate the body and aid recovery post intense exercise). This will help promote a higher calorie burn during your exercise session but if those calories are matched at some stage post personal training session than the added intensity did not hold any value on your aesthetics progress. This is why we scream to our clients as personal trainers at the EXOFIT studio, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 to not get too caught up on calorie tracking during your personal training sessions. Focus on your weak points (shoulders or glutes) and aim to see improvements in this and aim to focus your exercise minutes per week on improving this area of your overall health. The only and ONLY way to improve your aesthetics and body fat percentage is to put focus on your food relationship and calorie intake. Final takeaway, you actually can spot reduce fat but it is super super small for reward to effort and not worth focusing your energy on during your personal training sessions.
